Essential Health Support Campaign
A comprehensive medical examination of 1,500 orphaned children revealed a hidden health crisis. Now we need your help to reach thousands more.
The Discovery That Changed Everything
In 2022, GHWO organized a comprehensive medical examination of 1,500 children living in orphanages across northern Bangladesh. We went in expecting the usual challenges of poverty. What we uncovered stopped us in our tracks.
These children—who had already lost so much—were silently suffering from preventable health conditions. Conditions that could be addressed with the most basic resources: soap, toothbrushes, proper hygiene products, and access to specialist care.
The findings revealed a systematic failure to provide even the most fundamental elements of health and dignity. And this was just a glimpse into a much larger crisis affecting thousands more children across 450 orphanages in the region.
The scale: 450 residential orphanages surveyed across northern Bangladesh, each housing between 30 to 2,000 children. No government support. Basic resources stretched to the breaking point.
Key Medical Findings
What we discovered among the 1,500 children examined
Acute Skin Diseases
Nearly two out of every three children were suffering from acute skin conditions. The cause was devastatingly simple: they have no soap. Not for bathing. Not for washing clothes. Not for cleaning the bedding they sleep on night after night.
Solution needed: Regular supply of soap, lotion, and hygiene education.
Dental & Oral Diseases
Widespread dental caries and advanced oral diseases. Children lack regular access to toothbrushes and toothpaste. Some use wood ash or tree branches to clean their teeth. Many simply endure the pain.
Solution needed: Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and regular dental checkups.
Vision Problems
Undiagnosed vision issues that, if left untreated, will lead to squint, cross eyes, or permanent vision loss. Some children face the risk of blindness from conditions that are entirely treatable with early intervention.
Solution needed: Eye examinations, glasses, and specialist referrals.
Auditory Problems
Children suffering from hearing conditions that require specialist attention—care that is not available locally. Without intervention, these children face isolation and developmental delays.
Solution needed: Specialist auditory assessments and treatment.
Menstrual Health Crisis
Adolescent girls have little to no access to feminine hygiene products. Medical professionals warn that without proper care, some face complications that could affect their ability to become mothers in the future.
Solution needed: Sanitary products, hygiene education, and reproductive health support.
Long-Term Specialist Care
Additional health issues requiring medium or long-term specialist care that is not available locally. Organizing this care requires additional funds and supervisory involvement.
Solution needed: Specialist referrals, transportation, and ongoing medical support.
The Bigger Picture
1,500 children taught us a devastating truth
The 1,500 children we examined are not an anomaly. They are a window into a much larger reality. We have surveyed 450 residential orphanages across northern Bangladesh. Some house 30 children. Some house 2,000. Each one is facing the same struggles. Each one is filled with children whose basic health needs are going unmet.
These children taught us that the gap between "surviving" and "thriving" is not a chasm requiring complex infrastructure. It is a series of small, solvable gaps: a bar of soap, a toothbrush, a routine eye exam, a hygiene product, a visit from a specialist.
But the need is not isolated. It is systemic. It is hiding in plain sight across hundreds of orphanages, affecting tens of thousands of children.
The Scale of Need
- 450+ orphanages surveyed
- 30-2,000 children per orphanage
- Zero government health support
- Thousands of children urgently need Essential Health Support
Every day without intervention means more children develop preventable conditions that become permanent.
